Software:
- Final Cut Pro. The one and only.
- DVD Studio Pro: also a powerful program.
- shake. Node-based stuff is much more intuitive than the time-line style of After Effects.
- Mostly use Motion to do titles, but the concept is cool: I’m a sucker for anything that involves the GPU.
- Been doing my Color correction in the program named the same, though it would be nice to have a little Tangent controller.
- Photoshop is, well, photoshop.
- 3D: maya + boujou, sorta. Enough to do pretty plate work.
Mostly free/shareware:
- FTP: Cyberduck, Transmit.
- Text: Smultron, SubEthaEdit, Notepad++, TextMate.
- Latex: MacTex, Lyx.
- Revision Control: Subversion, been eyeing Final Cut Server.
- Windows PDF: Foxit.
- Browsers: Firefox, Camino, and Safari. (Nifty Firefox hacks: AdBlock + Filterset.G. For Safari, try AcidSearch and PithHelment.)
- Mail: I use Apple’s Mail.app, but Thunderbird would be my second choice.
- Video Players: VideoLAN, MPlayer.
- Office: AbiWord, OpenOffice (for mac, NeoOffice). I keep hoping for a cocoa version of Gnumeric.
- MySQL management: CocoaMySQL.
- FinkCommander (and, of course, Fink). On the other side, MacPorts.
- 3D: check out blender, or Wings3D. For compositing, Jahshaka and Cinelerra are promising, yet both have a bit to go.
- Paint: The Gimp has come a long way, and I like the UI/look of v2.4. Mac Gimp builds, working on ditching X11. CinePaint is based on an earlier branch, designed for frame-by-frame touchup. Cocoaized GIMP, making progress: Seashore. Shareware: GraphicConverter.
- Audio: try Ardour or Audacity.
- It’s hard to explain exactly what Quicksilver does (a GUI CLI?), but once you start it becomes habitual quickly.
- Nothing matches the elegance of HandBrake for DVD conversion. VisualHub is nice for dealing with other formats.
- KStars, Celestia and Google Earth let you explore the universe.
- Network: port shaping, throttled, monitoring: ntop, ipfw configuration: Waterroof.
- Linksys WRT-54g Firmware: Tomato, DD-WRT.
- Screenwriting: Celtx. Layout/SVG: Inkscape.
- Moving an OSX install, Carbon Copy Cloner.
- Secure chat, waste, IRC: X-Chat.
- RSS Agregator, NetNewsWire.
- HTPC, MediaPortal, MythTV.
- NAS, FreeNAS, OpenFiler. Making progress: Mac ZFS.
- Disk Partitioning, GParted.
- System Emulation, Q/QEMU.
- System stats: MenuMeters.
- VNC: OS X- client: Chicken of the VNC; Windows: TightVNC. Tip: OS X has a built-in VNC server, hidden in the Remote Desktop prefs.
- My current x11 window manager is actually fluxbox, but it drops easily into either gnome or KDE. Cool beans: KDE/Mac.
- This server: a mixture of PHP scripts with a MySQL backend atop Apache, running on a shared Linux box from ICDSoft.
- SpamAssassin helps cut down the thousands of pieces of spam I get a day. I hope enabling SPF will make a difference someday.

- Shareware: Oids.X, Escape Velocity, PaxGalaxia.
- Board: SigmaChess, Goban.
- GPL Remakes: Wing Commander: Privateer; Bungie: Myth, Marathon. Quake: Nexuiz.
